The Onion Once Again Mistaken For Reality

Posted by Stephen on July 11th, 2006 at 1:44 PM

The Onion is a satirical newspaper that is occasionally mistaken for a real news source. (Even by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, as can be seen at the bottom of the linked page.) Here recently they’ve been celebrating their tenth year online by re-running their favorite stories from each year on their front page. One article they re-ran was 1999’s I’m Totally Psyched About This Abortion!

Wouldn’t you know it, but a blogger by the handle of “Pete” thought the article was real and railed against it in the anti-abortion blog March Together For Life. When plenty of people on both sides of the abortion issue pointed out that he’d been duped by The Onion…well, let’s just say that his retraction was even funnier.

Oh my, I hadn’t seen the follow-up article… this is hilarious.

The sad thing is, he’ll totally be encouraged by that, and quote it when he feels wronged.

Wow, I just read the original Onion article, and I’m just…floored. Who could take this seriously?

Gosh. We zealots will grasp at any straws to make our point, won’t we? [See, I'm not in denial.]
