I second the ixnay on mushy ice. There are a couple ice skating rinks here in NYC, and some of the more popular ones get really beat up and mushy between the Zamboni-runs, causing more spills, falls, and unhappy collisions.

No, no, mushy ice will be only slightly softer to fall on, but *much* harder to skate on, thus more falls.

Why wait for winter? The Iceplex has ice 365 days a year. Mind you, it’s still a bit mushy right now, but that might be easier on a beginner …
