Thanks for the great article. I am in the same boat as alejandra. Are you able to contact him/her? I would like to know if they found a solution that works. Might save us time.

Oh…it would be really cool if the library software could register users and also take their fingerprints. Then if one wants to borrow a book, fingerprint scan instead of library card, its hard to loose one’s finger. We work with kids. Heard of any software that does this?

Hi, I’m shopping for a library software within the realm of what you discussed in this post. Needs to be PC compatible and the two I have looked into are Collectorz and Readerware. We need the loan/due capability for sure, being a small non-profit organization with members that have library benefits. Have you heard of BookCAT or Book Organizer? Anyone with suggestions? Thank you.

If you’re okay with storing data about your books out there on the Internet, I’d use LibraryThing. It can actually export your data so you can have a local copy as a backup, or if you later decide to use another program like Readerware.

Great article! I’ve been looking for something to catalog books and cds and found these same products. I’m wondering if now, almost a year later, how you feel about these products and what you would recommend for windows only user. Thanks.

My complaint about DL right now is there seem to be features that don’t work correctly with the trial version and I’m wondering if those will be resolved with the paid version. Specifically, the “location in building” notation. I want to be able to look up a book and find out where it lives in the house so I can go lay hands on it. Maybe Geof can say if this works or not?

I quickly tested this [one book tagged as Office, another as Bedroom, then searching on Books for "Office" and "Bedroom"] and it works in the registered version. DL2 is going to be Leopard-only. I swear, Leopard is going to push me over the edge to buying an Intel-based Mac. At that point, I'll have four PPC-based Macs in my house, none of which will ably run Leopard! [Steve ... let me just give you the password to my online banking now, guy.] MacHeist may not be the greatest thing for developers, but some did agree to be involved. It's a good deal for both users and MacHeist, though.

And now I've found a few other collaborative book cataloging sites like Web-2.0-name-compliant Zestr and Compender. Anyone have experience with those?
