Chemical Brothers: Star Guitar (2002)

Michael Gondry’s video for Daft Punk’s Around the World, in hindsight, looks like a warm-up for this video. It’ll take you a moment to figure out what’s going on. I’d be curious to know at what point you twig to what is the most clever use of this particular music video cliché I’ve seen.

Radiohead: Street Spirit (Fade Out) (1996)

There’s something deeply disturbing about how director Jonathan Glazer fiddles with the speed of events. Some of the video is silly, but the overall effect is one of melancholia. Brr.

The Chemical Brothers’ video was great. The reuse of a small bit of footage was really well done, considering that it does take you a minute to realize what’s going on. I also enjoyed the synchronization of sight and sound during the video. Nicely done.

Star Guitar:
Took me about 10 seconds. That’s just awesome. I think I usually react pretty strongly to videos that use that technique. See also my comments on “Take Me Out”. :)

Street Spirit:
That’s a visually striking technique, and I think it fits the tone of the music very well. There are a few spots where you can almost hear the director saying “Hey! Watch this!”, but overall it I thought it was very well done.
