Yeah, eventually I'll get around to profiling the Quadrangularis Reversum, but it was one of the last instruments he made so it will be a while before I get to it. Still, I did appreciate your Partch joke.

I've got a great assignment for Wikipedia that I sometimes use with my students that demonstrates the difference between fake and deep knowledge. I have them look up articles on the site on topics we're covering in class, look through the edit history and discussion, find errors or controversies, and them research those errors or controversies elsewhere. Amazing the stuff they learn and uncover and lets them see that Wikipedia is a good one stop spot for some knowledge (especially obscure pop culture from the very end of the long tail) but not so great for college term papers.

dfan: blame my brother for my Partch knowledge. Though I hadn't heard of the Quadrangularis Reversum, which is totally awesome.

MikeG: Huh, nifty. I'm going to have to try the period approach.

Neat Google tip I just learned the other day---using periods to combine search terms is equivalent to enclosing the terms in quotes.

So yellow.brick.road is equivalent to "yellow brick road".

At least for me, my typing fingers find the period much more reliably than the quotation mark.

Hey, I thought the Harry Partch joke was pretty funny?

When I checked Wikipedia to see just what n should be for Harry Partch and the n-Tone Scale (turns out it's 43), I found out that he had an instrument called the Quadrangularis Reversum. That's probably a dangerous spell to cast out on the Hogwarts quad...
