“Level 1.8? What does that mean?”
“I don’t know. Eli’s reading roughly level 2 books on his own.”
“What is this scale? Is 1 ‘Dick and Jane’ and 10 Thomas Pynchon?”

I’m rather glad it was, because otherwise all this referring-to-Eli-in-the-third-person would be unsettling.
