The first time I heard U2 was 1986. A friend let me borrow “The Unforgettable Fire” on cassette tape. I fell in love with “Pride (In the Name of Love)” and was pretty much hooked.

This is my view from the 27th row last night:

The show was UN. BELIEV. ABLE.

It was made better by getting to go with some of the people who know me better than anyone in the world.

Gals, let’s not wait another 20 years to see them again, huh?

On Saturday we went to Toad Suck Daze, a street festival in Conway, Arkansas. The railroad runs through downtown Conway, and while we were there, we got to watch a freight train rumble down the tracks and past us.

For the record, the EF-5 tornado that ripped through Harvest, Alabama about a mile from my house didn’t sound like a freight train. It sounded like a long, continuous grumble of thunder. At the time we thought it was thunder, caused by the near-continuous lightning strikes occurring ahead of the tornado.

We were lucky. As far as I can tell, our house wasn’t damaged at all. We’re all safe, as are all of my friends. We did lose power, since TVA scrammed all three nuclear reactors at Browns Ferry and the storm destroyed some two hundred poles, steel towers and transmission lines, not to mention many of the 500 kV and 161 kV lines.

We were able to flee to Arkansas to stay with family, at least until rising flood waters in central Arkansas sent us elsewhere. I promise, I’m not related to Jim Cantore.

If you want to help out, you can donate to an organization like the Red Cross, although I recommend not specifically earmarking the money for Alabama. If you’re near us, consider donating blood or needed items like water and tarps.

I’m a bit obsessed right now with keeping my ravelry.com page updated with photos of the work I’ve done. This is my Granny Square Shrug I re-finished this weekend. (I finished it the first time over Thanksgiving but it was WAY too big.) So I had to take it apart and make it a bit smaller and then sew the parts back together. While Stephen was taking my photo this morning before church, Liza had to get in on the action.

Eli and Liza got straw glasses for Christmas. They have been nearly endless entertainment for everyone involved.

I’ve not said much here lately. I’ve had a lot going on in my head. I think I needed a bit of time to catch my breath and think about a few things. I guess I’ve had a season of personal growth but I’m not sure how to put it all into words. My take away is that: Life is Big. I know, profound, huh? I’ve spent the last few weeks feeling so incredibly blessed by the people around me and the life I am so fortunate to get to lead.

Tuesday night we learned that one of our fellow crafter’s children has a terminal genetic problem. It is sharp blow for us in the group and all of us are searching for the right way to support our friend. Watching Becky deal with this and talk about it is so far beyond inspirational I think she might has single-handedly created a whole new category for mother bravery. If these are the times we learn what we are made of, Becky is made of amazing stuff indeed.

Spring is starting to happen. Finally. The Bradford pear trees have exploded into solid white overnight. Liza has asked twice a day for a week when we will hunt Easter eggs. Sunday is Easter, ending my first ever Lenten practice. I never thought I would undertake Lent and certain not give up what I gave up but I am so glad that I did. It has made my days richer and fuller in ways I haven’t completely processed yet. But I know that I am thankful. So thankful.

Some friends came to visit for the day and we played at Rocket City’s biggest attraction.

This year Eli finally got “trick or treating” and Liza thought carrying her bag of candy was almost not worth the effort. Oh wait, what am I saying? There was candy in that bag! Liza could have hauled that thing to Timbuktu for the crumbs off of a Kit Kat.

What crafter doesn’t want to hear these words from their children? Painting though is my least favorite because it involves water. Both kids really love to paint, so it’s always a special treat at our house. These are from this past week when it rained and rained and rained.

Yes, that’s paint all over Liza’s face.
