You Know I’m Gonna Be Like Him

When Eli comes to me asking to play with me and I’m in the middle of a task, I tell him, “One minute!” I then wrap up what I’m doing as quickly as possible so we can play.

The other evening he came up to me and said, “One minute!” and ran off.

“Cat’s in the Cradle” is now on infinite loop in my head.

How poignantly and depressingly familiar. Guess that’s why Harry Chapin did so well with that song, and why it quickly became a classic. Any thinking father recognizes himself in the words. If it’s any consolation, your own father has often had the same feelings–and understood his own father much better because of it.
