We never had elaborate Christmas celebrations growing up, mainly because we were an Air Force family and rarely spent the holiday at home. [I think I can count the number of times done so before I left for college on one hand and have fingers left over.] When you're changing where you go every year, those traditions are hard to come by.

Heck, we quit putting up a tree about 15 years ago.

Oh, and I found a nifty shortcut to holiday cookies: instead of rolling out dough and messing w/ cookie cutters, how about cookie molds? I am going to give these a try this year and see if I can acquire a reputation as a cookie goddess. :)

I've found that the way to keep xmas decorating from turning into a chore is to invite some friends over--esp friends who don't do a tree themselves--and make a party of it. Since you're going to do it early in the season, and possibly during the day, it's less likely to cut into other holiday parties. Everyone oohs and ahhs over the ornaments, you get to trade holiday stories, plus you can trade off keeping the kids occupied.
