Soliciting Ideas for Dragon*Con 2010 Talks

Hey, looks like I’ll be doing more science talks at Dragon*Con later this year. If you’ve got topic ideas, throw ’em my way. And, yes, Mike, I’m mulling a talk on metamaterials and invisibility cloaks.

You don’t think the Mythbusters Solar Death Ray episodes would preemptively steal my thunder?

Not as long as yours actually works. 🙂

That’s just one of the many possible death ray concepts that you can compare. Another is Tesla’s. Another might be a simple high-powered laser, or something involving nuclear radiation, or perhaps directed sound waves to liquify one’s internal organs…

Speaking of death rays, how does that military “pain ray” that I’ve heard about work? And if it does work so effectively, why doesn’t it cause permanent damage? Also, how much longer before I can have a hand-held model and go around yelling, “Set phasers to stun!” ?

For actual death rays, what about a phased plasma rifle in the 40-watt range? Just how deadly would 40-watts of plasma be? What about a talk about movie technobabble and just how effective they would be if the described characteristics were accurate?

How about transporter devices? Might be especially popular with the Star Trek movie from last year.
