Today’s Geek Observation

You can tell someone is a child of the 80s if they make a Gauntlet joke. But you can tell what kind of geek they are by which character they use when they say, for example, “Wizard needs food, badly!”

  1. Wow, now that’s an interesting theory. I guess I must be an “Elf! Your life force is running out!”

(It totally is, too. Starting with the hair.)

  2. The Rathskeller at Wash U had a Gauntlet machine – I spent many an hour at that machine. At some point they replaced it with some lame fighting game.

I have four USB gamepads specifically for playing Gauntlet on the PC. 🙂

  3. I have no idea what this is about and I don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing.

  4. Whoa. I made a similar comment this morning, then went on to explain how Gauntlet was not really a video game but a insidious device designed to extract quarters from 10 year old boys as fast as possible. At Showbiz Pizza.

I liked being the Valkyrie. I’m totally secure with that.

  5. Okay so we had this conversation this weekend in Orlando. Someone made a “I’m so hungry” comment and I piped up with “Red Warrior needs food badly” which of course caused the geeks in the group to laugh heartily. Comments about how awesome the game was flew around, and proceeded to bring out the comments about how much we hated dealing with death, stockpiling of keys and potions and other such comments.

  6. Man, “Gauntlet” is even more widespread than I thought. I wonder — is it such a touchstone because of its use of voiced status messages, or because of what those messages were?

  7. My question is more in the line of why so many people had similar thoughts at the same time…Coincidence or Psychic Phenomenon! *dun dun dun*
